Sanitization with Hydrogen Peroxide

Sanitizing with hydrogen peroxide is one of the technologies that F.lli Galli offers to disinfect and sanitize surfaces and environments. Hydrogen peroxide is a natural compound that is used in cosmetics, healthcare, etc. up to the disinfection of surfaces and environments.

Being a biocidal product, its use is highly regulated and must have obtained a marketing authorization or a registration. Additionally, this permission, although it may be valid for contact disinfection, must also indicate a use in the ASD. The 2014 NFT 72281 standard defines the effectiveness of an ASD process on bacteria, molds, yeasts, bacterial spores and viruses with a single effective dose.

Specific regulatory framework

Hydrogen peroxide is an active biocidal ingredient approved under the BPR for the disinfectants PT1, PT2, PT2, PT4 and PT5. In light of the data available in the CAR – Competent Authority Report, it appears that the active principle is effective against numerous microorganisms (bacteria, yeasts, fungi and viruses). Specifically, as regards viruses, hydrogen peroxide was found to be effective against poliovirus and adenovirus. In this case, the only application by vaporization / aerosolization of the active ingredient is considered.

Technical-scientific evaluation

The mechanism of action of hydrogen peroxide is linked to its oxidizing properties and the denaturation of the essential components of microorganisms. The antimicrobial activity derives, in fact, from the formation of powerful oxidants, such as 15 hydroxyl radicals and oxygen “singlets”. These reactive species cause irreversible damage to cellular components and DNA. Depending on the method of application, it can have multiple uses. There is a typical decontamination process based on hydrogen peroxide in the form of gas plasma, with which a predetermined rate of hydrogen peroxide is vaporized and injected into a decontamination chamber. The goal is to encourage the formation of a thin film of hydrogen peroxide on the exposed surfaces as quickly as possible. Once the necessary quantity of hydrogen peroxide has been dispensed, the aeration phase is carried out; where the hydrogen peroxide vapor is catalytically converted to oxygen and water. For the disinfection of surfaces / environments, hydrogen peroxide can be applied by aerosol or steam.

Diffusion in the Environment

Diffusion by aerosol, with equipment capable of producing particles in the order of 0.3-0.5 µm, allows for uniform diffusion in the environment. The highly oxidizing OH- hydroxyl radicals are responsible for the biocidal action of the product. The application of vaporized hydrogen peroxide has proven effective not only on a large number of microorganisms but also for the treatment of hospitals that had hosted patients with Lassa and Ebola viruses (56.57). Hydrogen peroxide rapidly decomposes into water and oxygen in the various environmental districts, such as surface water, soil and air. It also decomposes already in the sewage before reaching the sewage system, with a low environmental impact. Finally, with regard to the hazard, hydrogen peroxide is classified in a harmonized way according to CLP31 as: oxidizing liquid of category 1 [Ox. Liq. 1 – “it can cause a fire or an explosion (strong oxidant)]”; corrosive to the skin of category 1 (Skin. Corr. 1A – “causes severe skin burns and serious eye damage”) and harmful if swallowed and by inhalation of category 4 (Acute Tox. 4 – “harmful if swallowed” and “harmful if inhaled “).

Usage

Given the classification of the active ingredient, as well as the method of application, the use of vaporized / aerosolized hydrogen peroxide is restricted to professional operators only. For the treatments, the appropriate precautions must therefore be observed (Legislative Decree 81/2008) and it is also necessary to respect the times for access to the premises and the decay times.
